APULIA

Apulia! One must visit it all: from the mysterious grottoes of the Gargano, through the sunny fields of Cisternino and the pastures of the Western Murgia hills, through olive groves and vineyards, touching the almond, cherry, lemon and fruit trees, and reaching the Salento region embraced by the Adriatic and Ionian seas.
Puglia is something authentic and extremely Italian. It is a land of an unbelievable variety of colours. Here you will find rich red earth, tall dark green pine forests, silvery green olive groves and bright green scattered vineyards; glowing white towns, grey natural Baroque churches and ancient castles and buildings.
With sunshine for most of the year and olive groves which stretch along a beautiful coastline, it boasts one of the cleanest seas in Europe. Italians have long made it their favoured holiday destination and now with more cheap flights from the U.K. it is rapidly becoming a hot destination for gourmet travellers who are looking for something different to the more well known holiday destinations. Visit oil and wine making Fattorias , see beautiful Greco-Roman cities and mysterious ancient Trulli. Enjoy wonderful local cuisine and rich strong wines which are becoming known throughout Europe.

There are many interesting towns and villages within a very short drive of our Villas. The land in Puglia is often green when compared to other areas in the south. This is to do with underground water which the many olive and fruit trees tap into. Eating out is very reasonable with prices being suprisingly low. Italy's cost of living is the lowest of Europes holiday destinations and is half that of Ireland. The food is wonderful and the locals are very much family orientated and extremely friendly. Ceglie is proud of having a Michelin starred restaurant, once voted the best in Italy. It is also well known as being where Antonio Carluccio's has his favourite restaurant in Puglia. According to Antonio, ' There is a group of restaurants doing Puglian food, like Fornelli Va Ricci in Ceglie Messapica, which we go to a lot. They do something I love, called Fava e Cicoria - a purée of broad beans, flavoured with olive oil and served with chilli and garlic-infused wild chicory, or anything else that's green and slightly bitter.' A quote from Jamie Oliver in his infamous Italian series, he said,
' I love the country and everything it stands for - the wonderful ingredients, the beautiful places, the lovely people and the never-ending passion they have for their families. And their food, of course! I also think it's amazing that they have managed to retain a sense of tradition in this hectic world we now live in.'

Cisternino has been awarded the accolade of being one of fifteen of Italy’s most beautiful old towns. Cisternino has something of a reputation as a town of gastronomy with no shortage of restaurants and trattorias, which set their tables out in the narrow whitewashed streets and piazzas. You can stroll in the evening where you will find charming restaurants almost hidden in the pretty narrow walkways. As an alternative to eating out, the Monday morning market is a fabulous source of all the locally-produced ingredients which make the antipasta of Puglia truly sumptuous: pecorino cheese, local sausage and a plethora of seasonal fruit and vegetables.
